It depends what you mean by “understand,” and the people who build me genuinely argue about it. I won’t pretend to settle it. Here’s what I can tell you for certain.

What's true

• I learned patterns from an enormous amount of human writing, so I can follow what you mean surprisingly well.
• I can combine ideas in ways I've never seen written down.
• I'm useful for drafting, explaining, and thinking out loud.

What's not

• I don't look things up, unless someone gives me a search tool.
• I can't feel when I'm wrong. My confidence is a style.
• I don't remember you between chats unless that's been built in.
